Why was Hills to Climb created?

The founders of Hills to Climb believe that an outdoor summer camp experience should be available to everyone. Our programming introduces urban youth to the outdoors - building character, creating connection and providing opportunity.

Who is served by programming?

Hills to Climb serves groups of middle and high school youth from urban settings, specifically Baltimore, MD. Based on the this target demographic, most youth identify as low income and  part of minority populations.

What is the goal of the summer experience?

1. Character - Youth walk away with more confidence in themselves and willingness to try new things.

2. Connection - As a group, youth are more connected, understanding, and supportive of each other.

3. Opportunity - Youth have a newfound relationship with and appreciation for nature, aspiring to continue seeking recreation and stewardship opportunities.

What makes Hills to Climb different?

While the Hills to Climb summer experience may seem like a typical summer camp, our focus is to not only provide fun and engaging new opportunities for youth, but also to curate a landscape where campers develop important life skills in conflict resolution, teamwork, communication and social-emotional development and regulation - developing young adults with discipline, responsibility, character and empathy towards their peers.

What activities are included in the summer camp?

Youth are exposed to a variety of outdoor adventure activities including swimming, kayaking, climbing, mountain biking, hiking, camping, rafting, fishing, and more...focused on team-building and leadership development through small group challenges.

What is a typical day at camp?

Youth are engaged all day starting at 7AM with a morning stretch, followed by individual skill building, teamwork, reflection and group activities, concluding at 10PM lights out. Special days can also include service projects, field trips and off-site adventures. 

How much does it cost to attend summer programming?

Hills to Climb does not charge families a fee to attend summer programming. Mentorship groups sending youth to camp are asked to contribute up to 50% of programming costs for each camper, about $600 for a 5-day session.
